Pop/Indie Producers Exploring New Tools
Pop/Indie Producers Exploring New Tools
Rediscovering Shaper Box for Creative Uses
Shaper Box discussion came up recently. Usually just used it for volume shaping, but apparently more producers are exploring the distortion module and custom waveform manipulation for creative purposes.
Tried the Drive module combined with asymmetrical LFO waveforms and the harmonic movement was quite interesting. Loaded it on synth and vocal tracks - instead of clean sounds, got textured character which worked well.
Pop production seems to be moving toward unique textures for differentiation rather than clean sounds. Controlled harmonic complexity is becoming more valuable apparently.
Kick Sample Pack Issues
Interesting discussion about kick sample packs. Famous packs like KSHMR, Vengeance, VEDM have flashy marketing but lack punch in actual production contexts.
Specifically lacking that 'short punch' quality for fast-tempo tracks. Tried transient shaping - boosting attack while reducing sustain made them cut through the mix better. Tools like SPL Transient Designer or Logic's EnVerb work well for this.
There's clearly a gap between kicks optimized for demos versus what's needed in full mix contexts. Pop and indie producers could apply aggressive transient shaping techniques from EDM to make acoustic drums work in dense arrangements.
Chorus Structure Problems
Chorus writing discussion highlighted how many songwriters are creating choruses that function like bridges. Should be climactic and memorable, but coming out transitional and introspective instead.
Key points: raise melody 2-4 semitones from verse, add one new instrument or vocal layer, get the lyrical hook in the first 2 lines. These basics are often missed.
Notes: choruses need to create emotional peaks. Using them like bridges hurts streaming retention. Hip-hop could apply this through vocal arrangement changes, electronic through dynamic build-ups between sections.
AI Melody Generation Tools
Google Lyria 3 Pro is producing quite realistic-sounding results. AI music generation reaching practical professional workflow levels.
Tools like AIVA and Amper heading similar direction. Tried generating 10 melody ideas, then manually refining the best one in DAW - worked pretty well. Could become standard reference tools in pop production within 6 months.
When AI generates quality musical elements, it helps with rapid ideation and demo creation without needing live musicians for every element. Hip-hop producers could use AI-generated melodic elements for hooks, electronic artists for blending organic-sounding layers with synthetic elements.
Interactive Music Making as Streaming Content
Incredibox Sprunki type interactive beat-making is evolving into live streaming content. The music creation process itself becoming entertainment.
Tried tools like Beepbox during live streams - audiences can participate in real-time which is engaging. Blurs the line between music production and performance.
Could be useful later. Hip-hop producers could stream beat battles using interactive tools, electronic artists could incorporate live audience input through game-like interfaces in their sets.
